Home to the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority), the nation’s largest electric power supplier, the state of Tennessee has some of the best incentives for adopting renewables like solar energy including renewable energy generation payments at premium rates and contract periods of at least 10 years. Businesses that install clean energy technologies such as photovoltaic (PV) solar systems in the state of Tennessee are eligible for sales tax exemptions on qualifying purchases. As a result of the solar-friendly utility policies, large-scale solar panel farms are springing up across the state including a 5MW (megawatt) solar farm on some 200 acres. State of Tennessee Solar Installation Incentive Programs, Utility Rebates, Utility Loans, and Utility Incentives
The biggest solar incentive for Tennessee residents is offered through the TVA. Under their program, residents that participate in the TVA Green Power Switch Generation Partners program can receive a one-time $1,000 dollar incentive for installing solar in addition to receiving $0.12/kWh above the base rate for solar power generated from photovoltaics (PV). The system must be at least 0.5kW and can be no larger than 50kW (see TVA - Generation Partners Program).
